Biography of Professor:
Jiaxing Yuan received his Bachelor's degree and Ph.D. in Physics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2016 and 2021, respectively. From 2021 to 2025, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Tokyo, Japan. In January 2025, he joined The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) as an Assistant Professor and Ph.D. supervisor. His research focuses on the structure, thermodynamics, and dynamics of soft matter systems, including polymers, polyelectrolytes, nanoparticles, colloidal suspensions, hydrogels, proteins, and active particles. To date, he has published academic papers as the first author or corresponding author in top-tier journals such as Physical Review Letters, Nature Communications, ACS Nano, Macromolecules, and ACS Macro Letters.
In the field of soft matter physics, he has elucidated the mechanism of charge fluctuations and heterogeneous distribution in weak acid-weak base coated Janus particle systems, revealing their significant role in promoting particle aggregation [1]; discovered the "inverse squeezing flow" effect caused by fluid incompressibility, highlighting the importance of hydrodynamics in the self-assembly pathways of charged colloidal suspensions [2]; clarified the competitive mechanisms of electrostatic interactions, short-range attraction, and hydrodynamics in the collapse dynamics of polyelectrolyte polymer chains [3]; resolved the controversy over the role of hydrodynamics in protein folding rates, demonstrating that short-range squeezing flow effects facilitate the selection of fast folding pathways [4]; revealed that the coupling between slow stress relaxation in polymer chains and rapid local deformation during phase separation leads to the formation of network-like phase-separated structures, predicting unique growth dynamics of polyelectrolyte condensate phase separation sizes and providing new insights into biological condensates [5].
